Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an evidence-based form of psychotherapy that combines cognitive and behavioural techniques with exposure and response prevention. ERP involves gradually and repeatedly exposing a person to a feared object or situation while they practice not engaging in a compulsive behaviour or ritual. The goal of ERP is to help a person become less anxious and distressed when exposed to a feared stimulus and ultimately to habituate to the feared stimulus and gain control over compulsive behaviours.

CBT with ERP has been found to be effective in the treatment of a range of psychological disorders, such as anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. CBT with ERP can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in combination with other treatments, such as medication or other forms of psychotherapy.

It is important to note that the success of treatment with CBT with ERP depends on the commitment and dedication of the client, as well as the skill and expertise of the therapist. In addition, CBT with ERP can be an effective form of treatment but there are some risks associated with this type of therapy. Possible risks may include increased anxiety symptoms during treatment, exposure to upsetting memories, or feeling overwhelmed. It is therefore important to be aware of these risks before beginning any treatment.
