Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)

Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is an evidence-based approach to counselling and psychotherapy that can help individuals struggling with a range of mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, relationship issues, eating disorders, grief and loss, stress management, self-esteem, and conflict resolution.

The IFS model of therapy was developed by Dr. Richard C. Schwartz, a clinical psychologist in the United States. It is based on the concept that each individual is composed of a variety of sub-personalities, or parts, each of which has its own unique perspective and set of values. IFS is a non-pathologising therapy which does not label individuals and instead helps them to gain insight into their internal dynamics and develop healthier ways to manage them. This is done by helping the individual to identify, name and talk to their different parts in order to understand the needs and underlying motivations for the behaviours of each part, and to create more constructive options for responding to them.

The therapist works with the client to help them identify and understand their inner parts using words and symbolism, and to develop a relationship with them. This process of self-discovery can be challenging, but the therapist can help the client to understand the dynamics between their parts and how they interact with each other. IFS uses a range of techniques such as meditation, mindfulness, dream work, and imagery to help the client build a stronger connection with their parts.

IFS Therapy typically lasts between 8-20 sessions, however, it is important to note that it is not a time-limited therapy. Clients are empowered to remain in therapy until they feel they have achieved their goals and/or have developed the skills to manage their issues independently.

If you are looking for a way to gain greater insight into your inner workings and to improve your mental and emotional health, then internal family systems therapy may be a good option for you. It offers an approach that is both therapeutic and empowering, and can lead to greater understanding and acceptance of yourself and your inner parts.
