Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) is a type of anxiety disorder that causes an individual to have a distorted view of their physical appearance. It can focus on any part of the body or face, and does not mean that person is vain or self-obsessed. Symptoms of BDD may include constantly comparing one's appearance to that of others, spending extended amounts of time in front of mirrors or avoiding them completely, feeling anxious and avoiding social situations, and seeking treatment for perceived “defects”.

While BDD is not the same as OCD, it can lead to depression, self-harm, and suicidal thoughts. If you find yourself developing intensely negative feelings about your body, it may be time to seek help. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy are two of the most effective therapeutic approaches for BDD, while mindfulness techniques and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) skills can also be beneficial. Mindfulness practices can help to manage triggers and intense negative feelings, while breathing techniques and the capacity to act in the opposite of the urge to check the body can also help.
